Nematanthus pycnophyllus -- Peloric Flower

pycnophyllus bud

In November 2011, this plant had what appeared to be a peloric flowerbud.  The nights were chilly for where we are (around 32F), so it took a long time for the bud to open.

The flower finally opened on December 9, 2011.  It was worth the wait.

Note the six lobes.

This shows the flower from above, to provide an idea of the overall shape.  The species name pycnophyllus means "congested leaf" and refers to the closely packed foliage, which is reminiscent of some Crassulaceae.

This species tolerates 32F [0C] without harm.
