Jimmy Sutton Pays the Price

jimmy

These pictures were developed in December 1965, so the event depicted must have taken place in the autumn of 1965.

Update: After considerable discussion about the date, it appears that the dunking may actually have taken place in spring 1965.  The fact that the pictures weren't developed until december is consistent with taking many many years to post them.  But there has been further conversation about the personnel involved and the condition of the trees in the pictures.  Feel free to get involved in the discussion via the email address at the bottom of the first page.

Jimmy and Nancy got pinned, and getting tossed in the Charles River by the freshmen was the consequence at that time.  I have to wonder whether they still observe the same custom.  Lawyers and insurance companies might not like it.

It appears to be Bob Katz with the towel.

My memory fails me on the identification of the people in these pictures, other than Jimmy and Nancy.  Somebody help me out here.

Update: The fellow with the crewcut (also visible in the first picture) is, by consensus, Nick Johnson.  In the foreground is, by the same consensus, Gary "Montana" Anderson.  His presence is explained by the not-very-confident memory that upperclassmen were expected to make an unsuccessful attempt to rescue the abductee.  Bob Katz (carrying the towel) and I (taking the pictures) were obviously not taking our duty very seriously.

Update update: The consensus has dissolved.  It appears that Nick Johnson and Gary Anderson were never in Boston at the same moment, at least not before June 1966.  So the personnel identifications and the date of the photos remain up in the air, so to speak, awaiting the decisive memory of the person up in the air in the following picture.

And there he goes...

And here he is...
With his lovely wife-to-be...

Beautiful.  And Jimmy, he's a fine person too.

I don't know why I used black-and-white film for these pictures.  Or maybe I didn't.  Maybe the world was black-and-white that day.

Anyway, that's all there is!
