US Botanic Garden: Ruellias

Ruellia simplex plant

I like ruellias, and was pleased that the garden had two of them.  This one, Ruellia simplex, is a shrub.  The garden has it growing staked, with several stems in the bundle.

Here is a closeup of the flower.

Ruellia simplex
Ruellia chartacea

This is Ruellia chartacea, with red flowers (although the big red things appear to be bracts rather then flowers).

In my yard, I have Ruellia makoyana, which is the only species of this genus that I have found so far which can withstand our occasional freezes.
